Moisture - Testing, Measurement and Control
Pug
is a product that is produced thru a pugmill (sometimes spelled as pug
mill), a machine in which materials are simultaneously ground and mixed
with a liquid.
Industrial applications are found in bricks,
pottery, cement and some parts of the concrete and asphalt mixing processes.
In ceramics pug mills, or commonly known
just as "pugs", are not used to grind or mix, but rather they extrude clay
bodies prior to shaping processes.
Pug
Moisture....
Having the correct pug moisture level has
become a critical component during the production process. Being
such a porous material, pug can easily become either too wet or dry wasting
the manufacturer's time and money.
With the help of industry partners and
30 years of knowledge, MoistTech has developed the IR-3000 Moisture Sensor
which is ideally suited to measure pug moisture levels in the pug production
process while improving manufactures' product quality and lowering their
energy costs.
Installation….
By installing the MoistTech pug moisture
sensor in the processing area, a manufacturer can continuously monitor
the process and can control the pug moisture content either manually or
automatically. To accurately measure the pug moisture levels, the sensor
should be installed over the conveyor transporting the pug. The sensor
should be mounted several inches above the belt, screw conveyor or any
area where the material can be viewed. In the installations of spray
or fluid bed dryer’s, optical windows or sampling systems can be provided.
Environment….
Dust from the product is not normally a
problem however in extreme dusty environments we recommend the installation
of an air purge system to prevent the accumulation of material on the sensor’s
window.

Your MoistTech team of professionals are
very experienced with the requirements in the production of pug.
Our sensor calibrations, measurement wavelengths, algorithms and sensor
optical requirements are pre-set at the factory. Typical accuracy
is about ±0.1% moisture. Typical analog range is 0-10% moisture
and up to as much as 40%, subject to application. The outputs can
be adjusted to optimize PLC or recording requirements.
