Board Coating Moisture

Not only can our moisture sensors monitor moisture board coating production process, but they can also measure the board coating thickness. Coat weight has been calculated for many years using the difference between oven dry weight readings from scanners with basis weight and moisture sensors before and after each coating station. New measurement methods based on near infrared (NIR) and middle infrared (MIR) techniques have significantly improved the measurement of dry coat weight and for the first time enabled accurate independent measurements of both sides of the sheet or board.

Seamless Installation

The board coating process allows for numerous locations throughout the manutfacturing process that would be ideal for moisture measurement and control. The location is often determined by the space availability and accessibility on the web/converting machinery as well as manufacturer’s moisture control plan. Once installed, a manufacturer can continuously monitor the process and can control the moisture content or board coating, either manually or automatically.

The sensors are pre-calibrated prior to shipping to ensure a smooth installation. You simply plug and go!

Benefits of Board Coating Control

  • Improved product quality and consistency
  • Lower energy costs
  • Reduced start-up times
  • Less Wasted Product
  • 100% product inspection
  • Fewer line stoppages
  • Increased productivity & efficiency

Our sensor calibrations, measurement wavelengths, algorithms and sensor optical requirements are pre-set at the factory. Typical moisture accuracy is about ±0.05%, coating accuracy varies from 0.1 to 0.01 micron depending on coating type. Typical analog range is 0-10% moisture and up to as much as 40%, subject to application. The outputs can be adjusted to optimize PLC or recording requirements.
