PVB Plastic Pellet Moisture
PVB, or polyvinyl butyral, is an 80-year-old resin used for strong binding applications that need:
- Optical clarity
- Outstanding binding efficiency
- Adhesion to multiple surfaces
The most common application is laminated safety glass in car windshields, although they are also used in ceramic adhesives, inks, paints and coatings, binders for magnetic media, and adhesives for metals. Scrap from PBV applications is collected and made into pellets for recycling into polymer blends. It is also used as a coating material.
Why Control the Moisture?
As with any textile manufacturing process, controlling PBV plastic pellet moisture during production is critical to the product’s final quality. By measuring the moisture, the producer can ensure the quality of the end product and sell it at the appropriate price. The cost of the product is usually calculated based on the weight of the pellets, and the moisture affects this.
The moisture content varies a lot between raw materials and at different points in the manufacturing process. A moisture measurement system is critical that can:
- Measure the moisture continually
- Collect data at any point in the process
- Gets reliable, non-contact moisture measurements
How Do We Control the Moisture for PVB Plastic Pellets?

Typical moisture accuracy is about ± 0.05%, with coating accuracy varying from 0.1 to 0.01 micron, depending on the coating type. A typical analog range is 0-10% moisture. The outputs can be adjusted to optimize recording requirements or PLC.
