Torrified Wood Moisture

Product Consistency

Torrefaction of wood uses high temperatures to change biomass properties to make a better fuel quality for combustion or gasification. It creates a dry product that will not rot. This makes it easier and cheaper to transport and store. Creating pellets or briquettes from wood waste makes them lighter, drier, and more stable than the biomass from which they are created.

Forest residue and urban wood waste may contain as much as 20 to 50% moisture. During the torrefaction process, the biomass is heated in an oxygen-depleted environment at 200 to 300 degrees Celsius to remove the moisture and create a higher energy content. The resulting material has one to six percent moisture.

To keep consistency during the process, MoistTech has developed the IR-3000-W near-infrared (NIR) moisture sensor that is made for a rugged factory environment. It collects thousands of moisture readings per second and transmits them to either a controlling laptop or a computer network that can process them and make real-time corrections to the dryers on the line so that the end product will be consistent and high-quality.

COST OF OWNERSHIP

A moisture measurement system is essential for the production process and in some cases will pay for itself in less than 30 days

State-of-the-Art Equipment

With over 40 years of industry-leading experience, we at MoistTech have developed the cutting-edge IR-3000-W moisture sensor to revolutionize moisture measurement. With this sensor, maintenance or calibration isn’t required; it’s factory-set before shipping. It remains unaffected by particle size, color, or height — even small gaps don’t trigger alarms.

Building on this innovation, our sensor surpasses conventional limitations: conveyor belts and screws don’t impact results; it’s impervious to temperature and humidity and offers an unparalleled accuracy of ±0.01% moisture.

This state-of-the-art sensor can be connected to the company network or any laptop. It is Ethernet or RS232 compatible and Windows-friendly to allow for real-time control of your manufacturing line and immediate analysis of the data.

What is the Solution?

We’ve combined our decades of experience and knowledge with feedback from our industry partners to create a moisture sensor capable of taking instant, non-contact measurements of moisture, temperature, and other vital levels with the utmost accuracy. When it comes to moisture sensors, the IR-3000 is the most advanced system available.

Assess

Locate the point in the production process in which measuring moisture will be the most crucial and beneficial. Identify how you will use the moisture measurement data for improvements and if it will tie into your PLC.

Remember this could involve more than one installation point!

Develop

Incorporating a moisture measurement system into the manufacturing process establishes a closed-loop approach. Proactively addressing moisture control through accurate measurement helps avert costly setbacks and ensures consistent product quality.

Support

MoistTech’s team of experts stands ready to assess your unique application requirements. Through comprehensive lab tests, calibrations, and accuracy assessments, we ensure that our equipment will perform optimally for your needs. Each sensor undergoes pre-calibration before shipment, creating a seamless plug-and-play operation for end-users.

Understand the Process

Many biomass materials are produced as byproducts, residues, or wastes from some other processes, operations, or industries. Most of these have valuable energy content that can be usefully channeled into fuel. This also has the benefit of keeping the material out of a landfill. This includes wood, food waste, agricultural residues, industrial waste and co-products, and aerobic plants. Some foods are specifically grown to produce energy, like corn. MoistTech Corp. provides industrial sensors to measure and control moisture in almost any type of product.
