Overview

Powder coatings are finely ground thermoset or thermoplastic resins applied electrostatically to metal substrates and cured under heat to form a durable, high-performance finish. Precise control of moisture in both the powder material and the application environment is essential for maintaining product quality, appearance, flow characteristics, and electrostatic behavior.

Even small moisture fluctuations can cause significant process issues, including poor fluidization, inconsistent powder spray patterns, clumping or caking in hoppers, orange peel texture, pinholes, craters, fisheyes, low transfer efficiency due to charge instability, and uneven curing behavior. MoistTech’s IR-3000 NIR moisture sensor provides rapid, non-contact moisture measurement for powder coatings, enabling operators to maintain stable powder characteristics and ensure a consistent, defect-free finish.

Why Measure Moisture

Accurate, real-time moisture monitoring delivers multiple process and product benefits.

Process Stability

Stable moisture helps improve powder flow, charging, and deposition uniformity.

RECOMMENDED MEASUREMENT LOCATIONS

Incoming Powder Feed (Storage / Hopper Inlet)

Monitors incoming powder moisture to prevent clumping, bridging, and inconsistent flow. Typical incoming powder moisture ranges from 0.05–0.3%.

Pre-Gun / Fluidized Bed

Measures powder moisture prior to electrostatic application to improve flowability, charge retention, and deposition uniformity. Target moisture before application is typically below 0.2%, depending on resin chemistry and environmental controls.

Post-Cure / Final Coating

Verifies final coating moisture to ensure proper crosslinking, stable gloss and color, and long-term corrosion resistance. Typical final moisture target is 0–0.1%.

Installing MoistTech’s IR-3000 at key points, including powder feed, fluidized bed, and final cure verification, helps eliminate moisture-induced defects, improve transfer efficiency, reduce rework, and maintain consistent coating quality across all production conditions.
