Foundry Sand Moisture Testing
How Are You Measuring Sand Moisture?
Everyone has their favorite techniques. You may use green sand or resin, wet or dry method—but whatever you do—you know moisture is an indispensable part of sand casting.
To measure sand moisture levels, MoistTech has efficient moisture sensor systems, including NIR sensors and foundry sand moisture sensors. Maintaining the proper moisture levels when producing sand molds guarantees bonding takes place between materials to create the right cohesiveness, permeability, refractoriness, surface finish, flowability, and chemical inertness. Without achieving these properties, the quality of castings becomes compromised.
Sand moisture content is extremely critical and it can affect nearly all the physical and mechanical properties that are measured in foundry casting material. Continuous monitoring of the moisture content will allow for less waste, rework, and downtime and increased quality and production efficiency.
Ideally reaching a moisture content of 3-4% in foundry sand is easily achieved with a MoistTech unit, such as an NIR moisture sensor.
Non-Contact
Zero Drift
Closed Loop
No Recalibrations
Dryer Control
The IR-3000 takes instant, non-contact measurements of moisture in % wet and % dry, allowing you to regulate moisture either automatically or manually, but that’s not all it does. The CCS3000 takes highly accurate measurements of temperature, water-based coatings, and other levels important to foundry sand, using foundry sand moisture sensor readings.
Assess
Locate the point in the production process in which measuring moisture will be the most crucial and beneficial. Identify how you will use the moisture measurement data for improvements and if it will tie into your PLC.
Remember this could involve more than one installation point!
