Soft Pet Food Moisture

Overview
Soft and semi-moist pet foods are designed to deliver high palatability, balanced nutrition, and convenient feeding, but precise moisture control is vital to maintain product integrity and safety. Excess moisture promotes bacterial growth and shortens shelf life, while insufficient moisture results in weight inconsistencies, poor texture, and nutrient degradation.
MoistTech’s IR-3000 Near-Infrared (NIR) Moisture Sensor offers immediate, non-contact moisture analysis throughout the production process. These real-time measurements allow manufacturers to optimize dryer performance, control formulation consistency, and ensure final products meet exact moisture specifications.
Why Measure Moisture
Accurate, real-time moisture monitoring delivers multiple process and product benefits.
Quality Assurance
Energy Efficiency
Reduce Waste

RECOMMENDED MEASUREMENT LOCATIONS
Pre-Dryer / Mixing Stage
Measures moisture in the mixed or pre-conditioned dough before drying or extrusion. This stage helps balance added liquids, fats, and protein sources to achieve a consistent starting point. Moisture at this stage typically measures 55–65%, depending on the formula and product type.
Post-Dryer / Pre-Packaging
This is the most critical control point in soft pet food production. Monitoring after drying ensures the product achieves proper binding and texture while minimizing microbial risk. Typical moisture at this stage is 60–65% for soft or semi-moist food varieties.
Too dry leads to reduced elasticity, poor mouthfeel, and weight loss. Too wet increases mold and bacterial activity during packaging or storage.
Finished Pellet / Quality Verification
Verifying moisture before sealing ensures the product remains within specification and that no reabsorption has occurred during cooling or handling. Finished soft pet food generally maintains 60–65% moisture for texture and shelf-life consistency.
