Manufacturing Improvements with Mineral Moisture Sensors
The moisture content in conveyed products before entering the rotary dryer is crucial for effective temperature control. Typically, the moisture levels range from 5-15% but can be as high as 50% depending on the storage conditions. Overloading the dryer can result in wet products exiting the dryer, leading to issues such as screening plugs, equipment shutdown, and additional labor and downtime for cleaning.
MoistTech’s mineral moisture sensors and NIR sensors are easy to set up and use which will provide instant and precise measurements due to no constituent losses in handling. MoistTech is very experienced with the requirements of the mineral production process. Our sensor calibrations, measurement wavelengths, algorithms, and sensor optical requirements are pre-set at the factory. On moisture analysis involving dried minerals, accuracy can be expected to be +/-0.1%. The outputs can be adjusted to optimize PLC or recording requirements. To ensure optimal performance, it is essential to analyze the moisture content of the product as it exits the dryer. This analysis, driven by moisture sensors helps determine if any adjustments are required in terms of temperature settings or flow rate to achieve the desired moisture level. Generally, the moisture content at the dryer exit should be around 0-5% for most mined materials.
Mining companies are constantly adjusting moisture to maintain the quality of their product. Small variations and excess moisture in mixes can result in clumping, affecting quality and consistencies. Too dry of a product can result in excess dust. Measuring moisture prior to crushing can control particle size and also provide dust suppression. During the drying stage, in-process measurements using near-infrared moisture sensors ensure optimization and elimination of over drying, which can lead to product that is out of specification, degradation and an excess of dust.
Real-time moisture analysis is also necessary for subsequent processes, particularly for screening to achieve the desired particle size distribution. The water content plays a significant role in determining the particle size, and deviations can impact the quality of the finished product.
Moreover, excessive moisture in the finished product can cause issues during shipping, especially when transported by barge or truck. It can lead to overweight loading, resulting in fines for truckers or even accidents like a toppled barge. To prevent such incidents, it is crucial to ensure that the moisture content remains below the transportable moisture limit.

Let’s Build Something Together
Are you looking to measure and control the moisture within your process? We have installed thousands of sensors in even the harshest conditions, and we would strive to earn your business!
Near-Infrared Moisture Detection is State-of-the-Art
The precision of NIR moisture sensors can help increase the quality of your product, resulting in less lost time and money.
Combining our long experience with improvements suggested by our customers, we’ve designed a better, more precise and more accurate NIR moisture sensor.
More Precision that Other Technologies
The 3000 Series Near-Infrared moisture sensor is designed to not only be more accurate, but to be low maintenance, as well. An initial calibration is all it takes and our NIR moisture sensor is ready to go. The IR-3000 uses NIR technology to take precise measurements in percentage wet and percentage dry, allowing you to make real-time adjustments, either automatically or manually. Our NIR moisture sensor will help you achieve a better, more consistent product.
Instant ROI
The most “bang for your buck” happens when you can control the moisture in the process through an automatic, feed-back-loop control system. A feed-back-loop changes the process based on the in-line measurement. If the collection and analysis of real-time data is the only purpose of testing, but the analysis of the data has potential to define substantive future process changes, an in-line solution may have a high potential ROI.
Avoid Downtime with Quick Measurements
Enjoy immediate adjustments to your process based on real-time measurements from our online NIR sensors. Avoid costly downtime and excessive scrap by catching any out-of-tolerance readings as quickly as possible. Immediate changes can be made to your production line to stop extra waste and keep the line moving. Connect our sensors directly to your PLC by RS232 or Ethernet for complete software control of your line.
Unbeatable Accuracy & Reliability
Our non-drift optical design gives you repeatable results in the most accurate measurements available. Calibrated from the factory, the sensors require no further maintenance to maintain their accuracy. Results are unaffected by heat or humidity.
Mineral Moisture Processing
Moisture control on the production line creates large savings in a little amount of time. Measuring moisture during the production process vs. batch testing after, will create higher yield for the end product usage. Immediate ROI is seen with the installation of a moisture sensor measurement system as the plant controllers can instantaneously notice the reduced waste, energy usage & overall increase in product quality.
