Corrugated Board Moisture

A Superior Moisture Measurement System

During the manufacturing process, corrugated moisture control is extremely important. Proper monitoring and adjustment of corrugated moisture, can lead to a higher quality product. The porous properties of the corrugated board make corrugated moisture control extremely important. Being such a porous material, the corrugated board can easily become too wet or dry wasting the manufacturer’s time and money. Additionally, by controlling moisture, both top and bottom face material corrugators can eliminate curl.

The IR-3000 is designed to not only be more accurate but to be low maintenance as well. An initial calibration is all it takes and it’s ready to go. The IR-3000 uses NIR technology to take precise measurements in percentage wet and percentage dry, allowing you to make real-time adjustments either automatically or manually making it much easier to monitor your corrugated moisture.

Eliminate Common Issues

MoistTech is very experienced with the requirements of the corrugated board moisture control process. Our sensor calibrations, measurement wavelengths, algorithms, and sensor optical requirements are pre-set at the factory. Typical accuracy is about ±0.1% moisture. The typical analog range is 0-10% moisture and up to as much as 40%, subject to application. The outputs can be adjusted to optimize PLC or recording requirements.

  • curl
  • warp
  • breakage
  • collapse
  • flute-exposure
  • reduced edge control and lay flat

non-contact

Our equipment never comes into contact with the product, allowing for less waste

zero drift

Our sensors are guaranteed not to drift over time – which saves time and money

closed loop

Create a closed-loop process by tying a moisture sensor into your PLC. Full control over the line!

no recalibrations

We’ve mastered the art of moisture sensors – your unit will never need to be recalibrated for the same product twice!

Warp

Warp due to moisture can be a constant challenge in a manufacturing environment where the temperature and humidity vary. This is especially true for the corrugating industry where the top and bottom liner board moisture levels must be equal after bonding to avoid warp. Moisture levels can change with glue penetration or glue curing – both of which are affected by temperature.

Monitoring the amount of glue used can save a lot of scrap made from warping if the glue is set up improperly. Catch excess glue with a MoistTech moisture sensor that measure the amount of glue used to assure that the application is uniform and proper for the current temperature and humidity. Adjustments can be flagged and quickly made to keep your line moving and avoiding waste. Our sensors mount above the line, before and after dryers or sprayers, and in other non-contact locations to give you accurate measurements every time. Stop glue problems immediately because the MoistTech sensors are programmed to ignore gaps in the glue, color, and imperfections in the glue. They ignore conveyor belts and foreign objects.

Installing Success

When installing your IR-3000 for corrugated moisture control, it’s important to remember that it is most effective when installed at an angle to the web on which the board is transported. When installing the sensor in areas with extreme heat, the sensor will need to be protect so you will want it installed in an insulated box with a vortex cooler

By installing the MoistTech corrugated board moisture sensor online, a manufacturer can continuously monitor the process and can control the corrugated board moisture content in liner, medium or face locations, either manually or automatically.

In corrugated board plants, the sensor is often installed in extreme heat locations typically near a pre-heater. In this situation, it is necessary to protect the sensor and should be installed in an insulated box containing vortex cooler. Furthermore, the environment in board plants can be very moist. In this circumstance, an air-purge should be installed to prevent condensation collecting on the corrugated board moisture sensor’s optical window.

Understand the Process

Using the IR-3000 drastically cuts production costs. It is energy efficient, low maintenance, and decreases startup and down times. Over dried product causes waste; so does product that is too moist. With the IR-3000, these problems will no longer be an issue.
