PVB Plastic Pellet Moisture

Near Infrared Moisture Sensors

PVB, or polyvinyl butyral, is an 80-year-old resin used for strong binding applications. PVB plastic pellet moisture is an essential step in the process as the materials need:

  • Optical clarity
  • Outstanding binding efficiency
  • Toughness
  • Flexibility
  • Adhesion to multiple surfaces

The most common application is laminated safety glass in car windshields, although they are also used in ceramic adhesives, inks, paints and coatings, binders for magnetic media, and adhesives for metals. Scrap from PBV applications is collected and made into pellets for recycling into polymer blends. It is also used as a coating material.

Why Measure Moisture?

As with any textile manufacturing process, controlling PBV plastic pellet moisture during production is critical to the product’s final quality. By measuring the moisture, the producer can ensure the quality of the end product and sell it at the appropriate price. The cost of the product is usually calculated based on the weight of the pellets, and the moisture affects this.

The moisture content varies a lot between raw materials and at different points in the manufacturing process. A moisture measurement system is critical that can:

  1. Measure the moisture continually
  2. Collect data at any point in the process
  3. Gets reliable, non-contact moisture measurements

Unsurpassed in performance, our sensors can accurately measure  moisture within tenths of a percent of most applications

MoistTech sensors withstand the test of time and are low to zero maintenance

Rely on MoistTech’s NIR moisture sensors to never drift or need re-calibration

A moisture measurement system is essential for the production process and in some cases will pay for itself in less than 30 days

Dryer Control

Efficiency is a top of the line priority for manufacturers and the dryer can drain a lot of that. Measuring the moisture before and after the dryer allows the user to optimize the dryer settings to save time and money. A proper moisture control system will pay for itself with the energy savings from the dryer in less than 30 days. Efficiently controlling the dryer within the facility can drastically change the productivity levels.

The Best Solution

MoistTech has been controlling moisture in manufacturing environments for more than 40 years. Our skilled engineers, along with industry partners, have devised a new, advanced NIR sensor, the IR-3000 to monitor moisture, as well as take temperature readings and film thickness ones, continuously from above the conveyor belt. When the moisture is out of preset bounds, you are alerted, so that corrective action can be taken. Our sensor is pre-calibrated at the factory and requires no calibration maintenance.

Typical moisture accuracy is about ± 0.05%, with coating accuracy varying from 0.1 to 0.01 micron, depending on the coating type. A typical analog range is 0-10% moisture. The outputs can be adjusted to optimize recording requirements or PLC.

Locate the point in the production process in which measuring moisture will be the most crucial and beneficial. Identify how you will use the moisture measurement data for improvements and if it will tie into your PLC.

Remember this could involve more than one installation point!

A closed loop process is achieved by incorporating a moisture measurement system into the manufacturing process. Developing a proactive solution to moisture control will avoid costly downfalls.

MoistTech’s experts will assess your specific application with lab tests, calibrations and accuracy results to ensure our equipment will peform for you. All of our sensors are pre-calibrated prior to being shipped to create a plug-and-play operation for the end-user.

Understand the Process

Using the IR-3000 drastically cuts production costs. It is energy efficient, low maintenance, and decreases startup and down times. Over dried product causes waste; so does product that is too moist. With the IR-3000, these problems will no longer be an issue.

Using the IR-3000, you’ll save money throughout the entire production process, while making the best quality product at the same time. With MoistTech, you don’t need to compromise.
