Overview

Moisture content plays a critical role in the manufacturing of brick clay, directly influencing the strength, consistency, and finish of the final product. Maintaining the correct water-to-aggregate ratio ensures proper compaction, stability, and mold release. Insufficient moisture leads to crumbling and structural weakness, while excessive moisture causes deformation, cracking, and increased drying time.

Traditionally, moisture control in brick manufacturing has been performed manually, resulting in variable product quality and inefficiencies. By integrating an inline moisture measurement system, producers can achieve real-time control, optimizing both product uniformity and production speed.

The MoistTech IR-3000 moisture sensor provides instant, non-contact, real-time readings for brick clay production. Designed to withstand harsh industrial environments, it offers stable, repeatable performance unaffected by color, temperature, or ambient light. With factory pre-calibrated wavelengths and a maintenance-free optical design, the IR-3000 ensures consistent product quality and production efficiency.

RECOMMENDED MEASUREMENT LOCATIONS

To achieve consistent moisture control, sensors should be strategically installed at key stages of the brick production line:

  • Sensor 1 – Raw Clay Feed: Measures incoming clay moisture before mixing (typically 12–20%) to ensure proper water addition ratios.

  • Sensor 2 – Post-Mixer / Pre-Mold: Monitors moisture during forming to maintain ideal compaction (target 8–12%).

  • Sensor 3 – Pre-Dryer / Post-Press: Verifies brick consistency before drying or firing (target 6–10%), ensuring structural stability and reduced waste.

Understand the Process

The moisture content of the brick mixture is crucial to produce a quality end product with consistent results in every batch. The correct water to aggregate ratio allows for dense compaction of the clay and the brick will release easily from the mold. Too little moisture allows the brick to crumble; too much moisture causes instability.
