Overview

Iron ore is a critical raw material for steel production, and controlling moisture during handling, transportation, and processing is essential for ensuring optimal performance, quality, and cost-efficiency in steelmaking operations. Excess moisture in iron ore can increase shipping weight, cause dusting during loading and unloading, and create clumping or handling issues that lead to blockages and inefficiencies in conveyors and feeders.

Conversely, low moisture content can cause dust generation during transportation, reduced flowability during processing, and decreased sintering efficiency. MoistTech’s IR-3000 NIR moisture sensor provides continuous, non-contact moisture measurement at key points in iron ore production, allowing operators to optimize moisture content and improve process stability.

RECOMMENDED MEASUREMENT LOCATIONS

Incoming Ore Feed (Unloading / Storage)

Typical moisture range is 5–12%. Monitoring here helps ensure consistent material quality, prevent excessive moisture from entering processing stages, and stabilize stockpile blending for optimal feed quality.

Crusher and Conveyor (Critical Control Point)

Typical moisture after crushing is 4–8%. Measuring here helps prevent blockages, poor crushing efficiency, and excessive dust generation.

Sintering and Pelletizing (Final Processing)

Typical moisture after sintering and pelletizing is 4–6%. Measuring here helps ensure optimal pellet strength, uniform heating during sintering, and proper chemical bonding.
